GRAHAM, N.C. -- Promising to "invest in the people who build America," Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton brought her presidential campaign to the Graham fire station on Monday.

Clinton, stumping in advance of her May 6 primary election with Democratic front-runner Sen. Barack Obama, spoke to about 500 enthusiastic supporters who crowded inside and outside the fire station on Pine Street. She touted reforms in health care and energy, including a temporary tax on big oil companies that Clinton said will ease high gas and diesel prices through the summer during her roughly 30-minute talk.

Clinton also promised to end the federal No Child Left Behind education program and said she has a plan to begin withdrawing "one to two brigades a month" of U.S. troops from Iraq "within 60 days."

Clinton signed autographs and posed with the crowd for photographs after the event. She then took questions from the media.

Clinton Criticizes Obamas Objection to Gas Tax Holiday

GRAHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday criticized Barack Hussein Obama for opposing the concept of suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax during the peak summer driving months (from Memorial Day to Labor Day), a plan she has endorsed.

Obama does not support the "gas tax holiday" and has said the average motorist would not benefit significantly from such a suspension; by some estimates, the federal government would lose about $10 billion in revenue.

"My opponent, Senator Obama, opposes giving consumers a break," Clinton said, campaigning in North Carolina. "I understand the American people need some relief."

Clinton said she would make up the difference in revenue by imposing a "windfall profits tax" on oil companies.

"If we suspended it and made up the lost revenues, that's the best of both worlds," she said.

Clinton commented at a firehouse in Graham, where she was urging North Carolinians to take advantage of the state's early voting, which opened more than a week ago ahead of the May 6 primary.

She and Obama have been pushing their supporters to go to the polls early here and Indiana, which also votes May 6.

Besides her push for early voting, Clinton was to spend part of the day raising money. She and daughter Chelsea were to appear at a closed-door fundraiser in Greensboro, with two more fundraisers scheduled later in Charlotte.

ELON - Mixing personal anecdotes of his presidency with reasons why his wife should get the job next, Bill Clinton drew a crowd of nearly 3,000 at Elon University during his "Solutions for the American Economy" tour through the state on Wednesday.

Clinton's voice strained at times during his nearly hour-long talk touting the candidacy of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, but not his sense of humor.

Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem and superdelegate Susan Burgess introduced the 42nd president. Referring to the candidates "fawning" over superdelegates, Clinton quipped: "I want you to know I don't approve of that, but I did wash her car before we started this rally."

Clinton was scheduled to arrive at Elon at 3:15 p.m., but was about 80 minutes late. The crowd appeared to be mostly Elon students and Hillary Clinton supporters, but Obama faithful and folks of all ages were sprinkled throughout the crowd.

Hillary Clinton is waging a tight battle with Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, while Arizona Sen. John McCain has locked up the Republican nomination.

Clinton praised each saying "they are truly historic figures," but insisted his wife is the best choice for president.

"The real issue here is not which of these three admirable people will be the most historic, the real issue is who will make the best future for you."

As president, Hillary Clinton will create 8 million jobs "in the next couple of years," Clinton said - 5 million by making "a serious commitment to energy independence through more homegrown clean-energy efficiency," like solar energy and biofuels, and another 3 million "by fixing the infrastructure of America."

As president, Hillary Clinton will repeal subsidies to oil companies Congress passed in 2005, Clinton said.

His wife's plan will provide affordable health and dental coverage to all through more efficient management, Clinton said.

"Every other country knows you can't control health care costs unless you cover absolutely everybody."

McCain's plan covers "the fewest," he said; Obama's covers "most."

"You just have to decide whether you think this is important," Clinton continued. "I don't care who you elect president, if we keep doubling our health care costs every seven years, you can't bring the economy back. There won't be enough money to invest in education. People won't have enough money to consume."

The Bush Administration "has declared war on science," Clinton said. "They spent too little money and invested too much politics."

Hillary Clinton will help bring manufacturing jobs "back to America" and "get America back into the research business" through work on stem cells, the human genome and global warming.

Referring to the large U.S. trade deficit with China, Japan and South Korea, the former president said Hillary Clinton "will take this country back to balanced budgets and give the young people in this audience their future back.

"In a globally interdependent world, you cannot be an effective social progressive unless you're a fiscal conservative," he added.

Trade laws that encourage American companies to invest and move overseas need to be changed, Clinton said.

When it comes to education, Sen. Clinton will work to provide "universal preschool to all of our kids" and "do something drastic to overcome the problems created by No Child Left Behind."

Raising the tuition tax credit from $1,600 to $3,500, are among Sen. Clinton's reforms to make college affordable for everyone.

Of the three presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton is the best-qualified to be commander-in-chief and solve the country's problems, the Bill Clinton concluded.

"The thing that really matters in the presidency is whether you're a change-maker, if you agree that the test is are people going to be better off and young people are going to have a bright future," he said. "I've never known anybody who could look at a problem and figure out what to do about it better."

Some polls show Obama with a large lead over Hillary Clinton in the run-up to North Carolina's May 6 primary.

In an interview with the Times-News, Clinton said to win the North Carolina primary, his wife "needs to be here as much as she can and make her case directly to the people.

"Chelsea and I need to help her as much as we can. We got a lot of great grass-roots supporters here."

His wife, Clinton said, "got a little break today because Sen. Obama's campaign strategist said that the people they lost in Pennsylvania they didn't need ... middle class, working-class people in these small towns" to win the White House.

Clinton disagreed with that supposed assessment. "We need everybody to get this thing done."

To gain the nomination, Hillary Clinton needs to "win the popular vote" but doesn't have to win all the remaining primaries, Bill Clinton said.

The Democratic Party has refused to count delegates from the Florida and Michigan primaries because the states held their primaries earlier than they were supposed to.

Seating those delegates at the Democratic convention is the "morally right thing to do," Clinton said.

Boys puppy stolen

SWEPSONVILLE NC - Eleven-year-old Nathan Stutts just wants his little dog back.

His 3-pound chocolate Chihuahua, named Copper, has been missing since Thursday, and Copper's owners think someone took him.

Copper got out of Amanda Cantrell's house on East Main Street in Swepsonville at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday. Cantrell's boyfriend was cutting the grass in the back yard at the time. Copper followed Cantrell's 5-year-old son out the door.

About an hour later, Cantrell, who was still at work, learned that the dog was missing.

"When I got home, we started walking up and down the street calling him," Cantrell said.

They searched everywhere for Copper and asked neighbors if they had seen the 6-month-old puppy. One neighbor said he saw someone in a "red, bus-type vehicle" stop and pick up the Chihuahua.

"He said they stopped the vehicle, opened the door, called the dog over and he jumped in," Cantrell said.

The neighbor assumed the driver of the vehicle was going to return Copper to his owners, but it never happened. Nathan is heartbroken about his dog and continues to worry about Copper's welfare.

"That night he asked, ‘What if he's dead? What if they killed him?' I just tell him to think happy thoughts and pray someone cares enough to bring him home," Cantrell said.

Copper already had an appointment to be neutered at the beginning of April. He was wearing a black nylon collar with little skulls on it. His collar had a bell on it, a heart-shaped rabies tag and a gold medallion with his name and Cantrell's phone number on one side and her address on the back.

"My thought is that nobody is going to bring him home," Cantrell said. "I just wish someone would find it in their heart and think about this little boy. What makes me so mad is that he was properly tagged. I did what I needed to do to let people know this dog has a home."

Cantrell reported Copper stolen to the Alamance County Sheriff's Department. She's put an ad in the Times-News and is making fliers to put up in area veterinary offices.

Nathan continues to hope that someone will return the dog he's had since November.

"That was his buddy. I tell him, ‘Keep praying,'" Cantrell said. "All you can do is pray and hope that someone will find it in their heart."

I saw this story in the paper this morning and thought my Internet friends would be interested.
That boy loves and misses his puppy. I hate it got stolen and feel sad for him.
Maybe the people who took it will return him, even though I am doubtful that will happen.
I don't think they want to kill it. Hopefully, they will take good care, love, and give that cute little puppy a good life.

Beef Burger: Blast from the Past

I went yesterday to get a CD that was unavailable here. So I rode to the CD store in Greensboro to get it. On the way I passed a Beef Burger restaurant on 1040 W. Lee Street and I was getting hungry so I thought to myself that I would stop there on the way back.

There used to be a Beef Burger at Cum-Park Plaza shopping center in Burlington a long time ago, but it burned down. The building that burned down was the one they built to replace the old one... that brought about the end of Beef Burger in that location.

I got to the CD store and they had what I wanted. I left and headed to Beef Burger. Stopped by. Got a Double Beef Burger w/ lettuce, tomato, and special sauce, order of Fries, and medium Diet Coke. The food was just as good as I remembered. I had a pleasant experience in Greensboro.

It was 4:36 pm when I finally started on the trip home and during that time of the evening traffic is heavy. I made it just fine.

Burger Chef: Fond Remembrance

Burger Chef - Let's eat out

There used to be a Burger Chef in Burlington, NC near the City Park. I used to love going there to eat with my family when I was growing up. The food was tasty and affordable. Cheeseburgers, fries, apple turnovers, and milkshakes. Oh, those apple turnovers were the best around. A great fast food restaurant. Back in the good old days, and those were good days. It's sad they went out of business in 1982.
